Week3
This is my research topic explained. This is the direction I want to go this year. I am not sure if it is a solid idea yet.
‘The Viability of Integrating Modes of Animation in Contemporary Cinema’
In my Honours year I will be researching the technique of combining 2D and 3D animation in contemporary cinema. I will be focusing on the use of the perception of depth on screen using 2D and 3D elements. This technique can be an alternative visual avenue worth exploring.
The feature length films Titan A.E. (2000), Treasure Planet (2002) and Tekkonkinkreet (2006) have each employed this hybrid technique of combining the two types of animation in new ways. I will compare these separate projects and discuss the advantages and disadvantages and how they overcame issues relating to the integrating of 2D and 3D on such large scale projects. This will also do an image analysis of the three films.
I believe this a great opportunity to discover something new. I believe that in this day and age of animation we need to keep exploring this creative medium even more. One way of pushing the boundaries is to have another good look at the art of integrating these two mediums of animation to discover new ways to tell stories to the next generation.
My general strategies to finalize my studio research will be to produce a short animation of 3-4minutes in length that uses 2D and 3D. I will use computer hardware and software that allow to build and animate and composite together a film.
Here is the short 3D animated Film I produced last year. I also built the website.

week2
Week2
This week we had the privilege of listening to two Graduate Animation Honour year students. They have come to talk about heir projects and how they did it and what they thought about it.
The first was a guy called Darren.
After completing 3rd he found out that he was strongest skills were in 2D not 3D.
>Had a strong interest in Comics
>His Honour year project was to produce a comic book.
>He kept up a numerous visual journals throughout the project
>Got a scholarship for an internship in India at a comic studio.
>He found his comic book was a real organic process with all the character development and visual development..
“Go crazy have fun but don’t loose sight of the target’
Quote: Darren paraphrased
>Finished internship at a small film school in Mombi, India.
>Now has a greater appreciation for what is available in Australia.
>Out of all the Chaos it really came out in my work. Take that as a positive.
What is the best out come for doing Honours?
“Honour year really helped me to focus on what I am really passionate about.”
Quote: Darren paraphrased
>1 year goes so quickly .
“There is an openness and freedom in the Uni structure. I was able to do something that was not able to do in 3rd year Animation studies and something not possible if working full time in the industry.”
>Spent time teaching students in the film School in India and found that he enjoyed teaching.
>Darren recommends to consider and international intership
Writing comics DC,MARVEL and DARKHORSE are big influences in comic industry.
Darren when coming up with an idea for a comic book he did not want to be derivative to main stream comic series. He wanted to explore personal style?
Paul another graduate Honour Student.
What helped you come up with your idea?
Paul had no real idea what he wanted to study at the beginning. Sister suggested the topic ‘humour in animation’
For film idea he wanted to something simple about humour like simple random facts.
He like films that talk to people.
‘Try to relate your thesis to your film as much as possible”
“Focus on something that you like, especially if its an interest from 3rd year study’
Paul found it hard to focus on a point with the topic of Humour in animation. Humour is such a broad area to talk about.
For Paul his Internship turned into a job.
>In honours year that there are tough markers.
>Its not a slack year there is heaps of work to be done.
“ Do internship as early as possible in the year. At the end of the year you will be too busy trying to finish your short film and thesis”
Quote: Paul Paraphrased
>If you are working full time it is very hard to find the mental energy to work on short film and thesis.
Use animation for it power. Miss use gravity stop or slow time etc.
Its about learning process
About context of research
Using skills for grater abilities
And to improve life skills
End.
Leon: I found these two students advise very helpful and I have appreciated their thoughts and honesty about their studies. I am going to take this information and apply to my Honour year.

week1
I have decided to make a blog of notes for my University studies. Over the next few months I will be posting notes, thoughts and processes in the course of my research and study.
Week1:
Purpose of Honour year:
1.Primarily research idea.
2.A year for excellence in expertise
3.To use core research skills
4.Deliver a 5000 word paper
5.This will consist of form, tone and structure of a an essay
Seriously start thinking what are the issues that are important to your area (my focused expertise).
Research question: Your research must ask question and answer it.
Practice and reflection of skills
How achievable is my research.
Need to find cannon of works, a serious of text, work.
Some of the things that happened to Honour students in previous year:
>Over ambitious
>Massive work commitments.
>Lack of personal management
>Lack of personal planning
A thing that can happen to you in Honours year is to have incredible expectations on yourself.
Need to get preproduction done early.
Internship:
>must relate to your research idea.
The positive: Learning on the job
Insight in the industry
Mentor with project.
The negative: a lot of organizing
You will have to do it yourself
Can be difficult finding a meaningful placement
International student exchange can also take the place of an internship for honours
>Need to apply for scholarship
>Will constitute for internship.
In honours you need to ask yourself what you really want to do.
Next two weeks are important.
A lot of self management.
What do you eant to learn?
Where do you want to do it?
When do you want to do it?
Intern material required
>resume
>Demoreel
>Portfolio
>Unofficial transcript
>Reference from academic supervisor
>Cover letter
Research the companies that you are considering doing an internship
What do they do?
For next week. Email revised project research proposal.
To find information about you idea look at
>Online journals
>Academic writings
>and library resources.
Need to find out what already out there.
Short Film project notes:
What do you want to learn?
What do you want to achieve?
Learning outcomes/what do I want.
To further develop your animation skills?
Story skills?
Identify what Ii can do better in the 4th year
Compared to what was made in 3rd year
Need a plan for the whole year .
Need to keep a track of everything so I don’t fall behind.
