week2

Week2

This week we had the privilege of listening to two Graduate Animation Honour year students. They have come to talk about heir projects and how they did it and what they thought about it.
The first was a guy called Darren.
After completing 3rd he found out that he was strongest skills were in 2D not 3D.
>Had a strong interest in Comics
>His Honour year project was to produce a comic book.
>He kept up a numerous visual journals throughout the project
>Got a scholarship for an internship in India at a comic studio.
>He found his comic book was a real organic process with all the character development and visual development..

“Go crazy have fun but don’t loose sight of the target’
Quote: Darren paraphrased

>Finished internship at a small film school in Mombi, India.
>Now has a greater appreciation for what is available in Australia.
>Out of all the Chaos it really came out in my work. Take that as a positive.

What is the best out come for doing Honours?

“Honour year really helped me to focus on what I am really passionate about.”
Quote: Darren paraphrased

>1 year goes so quickly .
“There is an openness and freedom in the Uni structure. I was able to do something that was not able to do in 3rd year Animation studies and something not possible if working full time in the industry.”

>Spent time teaching students in the film School in India and found that he enjoyed teaching.
>Darren recommends to consider and international intership
Writing comics DC,MARVEL and DARKHORSE are big influences in comic industry.
Darren when coming up with an idea for a comic book he did not want to be derivative to main stream comic series. He wanted to explore personal style?

Paul another graduate Honour Student.

What helped you come up with your idea?

Paul had no real idea what he wanted to study at the beginning. Sister suggested the topic ‘humour in animation’

For film idea he wanted to something simple about humour like simple random facts.
He like films that talk to people.

‘Try to relate your thesis to your film as much as possible”
“Focus on something that you like, especially if its an interest from 3rd year study’

Paul found it hard to focus on a point with the topic of Humour in animation. Humour is such a broad area to talk about.

For Paul his Internship turned into a job.
>In honours year that there are tough markers.
>Its not a slack year there is heaps of work to be done.

“ Do internship as early as possible in the year. At the end of the year you will be too busy trying to finish your short film and thesis”
Quote: Paul Paraphrased

>If you are working full time it is very hard to find the mental energy to work on short film and thesis.
Use animation for it power. Miss use gravity stop or slow time etc.
Its about learning process
About context of research
Using skills for grater abilities
And to improve life skills

End.
Leon: I found these two students advise very helpful and I have appreciated their thoughts and honesty about their studies. I am going to take this information and apply to my Honour year.
